What a charming opera this is. There are many beautiful melodies which, for Gounod, is not surprising. Mirella Freni has exactly what Mireille needs, a spinto voice with agility and charm. Only one minor blip at the beginning of the opera finds her hoarse on one note. Should have been fixed. This is a difficult role and friends of Gounod thought it was unsingable for a purely lyric voice of the first Mireille. -Amazon-

In 1949 Pettersson composed his Violin Concerto #1 (Concerto for Violin and String Quartet), which was written during a bicycle vacationing trip in Holland. Pettersson commented:
"That summer the bicycle trip did not produce much of what I had imagined it would – a musician and soloist has to be in top physical form. I had to stop at almost every fork in the road to write down the notes."

"...The singers are both dramatically and vocally superb; this is probably as close to a dream cast for the opera as one is likely to get. Ildebrando D'Arcangelo and Anna Netrebko are completely winning as Figaro and Susanna, and there's real chemistry between them. (...) The sound is remarkably fine for a live recording; it's bright and clear, as well as warm and intimate, and the singers' volume levels are steady despite their movement around the stage." (AMG)

Rosa Ponselle (January 22, 1897 – May 25, 1981), was an American operatic soprano with a large, opulent voice. She sang mainly at the New York Metropolitan Opera and is generally considered by music critics to have been one of the greatest sopranos of the past 100 years.
She was born Rosa Ponzillo on January 22, 1897, in Meriden, Connecticut, the youngest of three children. The family lived on the city's west side in a neighborhood chiefly populated by immigrants from the south of Italy, first at the corner of Lewis Avenue and Bartlett Street, then on Foster Street, where...

The Englishman Peter Philips spent most of his life abroad, and was celebrated all over Europe in his day. Despite this, Philips’s music has been neglected since his death in 1628—of his immense output of vocal music, to this day most people know only a handful of motets from the five-voice Cantiones sacrae (1612). The present recording of half of the companion volume of eight-voice motets seeks to remedy this situation.

Aheym is Dessner’s (b. 1976) debut as a composer, enlisting the California-based Kronos Quartet to lift his compositions off the page rather vividly. One of Aheym’s biggest strengths is how a quartet ... sounds so robustly full and rich. This is a major testament to the quartet’s masterful technique and cohesion as a unit. With Dessner at the helm, Kronos Quartet execute his pieces with majestic excellence, bucket-loads of character, and a precision that’s almost deadly.

Pulitzer and GRAMMY® Award winner Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962) is one of the most performed living American composers, and this program provides a unique opportunity to hear première recordings of her earlier chamber music. The String Trio was written while Higdon was a developing young composer, and the influences of Prokofiev and Copland can be heard in the Sonata for Viola and Piano. The beauty and immensity of the Western US sky was the inspiration for Sky Quartet, while Dark Wood explores the soulful and virtuoso character of the bassoon.

Avant-Garde / Classical / Modern Composition

France has been the birthplace of some of the greatest creative minds of the 20th Century. Duras:Duchamp is a tribute to two timeless figures who have forever changed our view of the world. Over thirty minutes in length, Duras is a major new composition inspired by the romantic writings of Marguerite Duras and the mystical music of Olivier Messiaen. Seductive, elusive, ritualistic. Duras is a hypnotic work of startling clarity and complexity. Étant Donnés is the perfect companion piece to Duras: a provocative noise trio inspired by the enigmatic last masterpiece of Marcel Duchamp, one of France's greatest conceptualists.

John Corigliano's violin concerto 'The Red Violin' originated as the score to a film about a violin by one of the Old Italian master-builders, and its journeys around the world throughout three centuries. While working on the film score, Corigliano also produced a one-movement concert version of it, which he later expanded into a full-scale concerto in four movements. The son of a violinist, Corigliano’s aim was to write a concerto in a style his father would have wanted to play, and he has managed to do so without sacrificing any of the music's communicative qualities, or its wealth of colours, emotions and atmospheres.
